The initial project involved the English translation of the first scientific theory on the construction of cities, the General Theory of Urbanization, written in 1867 by Ildefons Cerdà in Barcelona, and the development of an platform with open data from his research.

El atlas no es un análisis del sector económico del turismo, sino como éste afecta al tejido urbano y social de la ciudad.

dataWAR | big data in times of war https://ka-au.net/datawar-big-data-in-times-of-war/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=datawar-big-data-in-times-of-war Thu, 23 Nov 2017 15:58:14 +0000 https://ka-au.net/?p=7935 The ukraine war explained throught cartographies made with data.

The overall number of documented casualties in the Donbass conflict, which started in mid-April 2014, now stands at 30,729, including 9,333 killed and 21,396 injured (UN Security Council meeting, 28th April 2016). Numbers vary widely depending on the source: 2,568 civilians were killed from 6 April 2014 to 15 February 2016 according to UN body OCHA while Donetsk People’s Republic reports 3,938 civilian deaths in roughly the same period. The opposing sides interpret information depending on their interests. In addition, data generation is a very slow process that could continue well beyond the conflict itself.

Traditional statistics, giving information on general indicators at a country level, become unable to describe a crisis situation like the ongoing war in the Donbass Region. On the other hand, media around the world act a barometer for the situation. Co-operation and human rights associations also report on the evolution of the conflict, and the Internet community, via social networks or collaborative cartography, can describe the problem at smaller scale. These other data sources, that are normally used to describe phenomena at an urban scale, become essential for accurately illustrating a territory under pressure.

Big Time BCN https://ka-au.net/big-time-bcn/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=big-time-bcn Thu, 23 Nov 2017 15:47:47 +0000 https://ka-au.net/?p=7932 BIG TIME BCN is an interactive map of Barcelona that highlights the age of urban plots contrasted with the city’s architectural heritage. This dynamic cartography offers an insight into more than 2,000 years of history, nearly 70,000 plots and 3,000 protected monuments.  For the first time, complete information on Barcelona’s heritage is available for citizens, professionals and tourists in a synthetic, open and flexible format.

BIG TIME BCN aims to be a tool for pleasure of those who love the city of Barcelona. It seeks also to become a reference platform for professionals and students that provides cadastral and heritage information in a novel and effective way.

The cartography represents a first attempt to include several existing databases and archives, most of them still to be digitized or opened. Big Time Bcn is useful for visualising information but also it melds different data sources into a single representation.

Geographies of innovation https://ka-au.net/geographies-of-innovation/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=geographies-of-innovation Thu, 23 Nov 2017 15:23:11 +0000 https://ka-au.net/?p=7921 Innovation occurs in education, civic organization and economy as the result of multiple social, financial and urban factors. This map explores innovative initiatives in Barcelona, where they are located, how they cluster in urban space and which sector of activity they belong to.
By exploring four different layers, you can examine several aspects that significantly influence the location of these innovative initiatives: sociodemographic context, urban fabric, functional indicators and spatial organisation (network).

Density
The metropolis as concentration
The metropolitan area of Barcelona Is an inhabited landscape. How are people distributed? Which spaces do workers occupy? In which more or less compact areas am the different urban uses to be found? Population density and the constructed fabric reflect an intense metropolitan life whose form varies from the multipurpose city centres to the residential outskirts and industrial areas. A city must be a positive and necessary concentration.

atNight project aims to raise questions about the configuration of nocturnal identity. What elements and values define our nightscapes? What is the relationship between the city we perceive during day-time and its nocturnal identity? Taking Barcelona as a paradigm, we have represented different aspects of the city organization by night in order to approach the structure of nightscapes. Explore the project cartographies using our map viewer.
